Fixin' to fly!

Here we are back at Toccoa again for the Currahee Military Reunion Weekend. We first performed for this group when the HBO mini-series, 'Band of Brothers' premiered and the USO hired us to sing for this event. Now we are a yearly 'thing' and it's one of our favorite occasions.

These guys are 'the reason for the season,' as they say; the fast-disappearing original Band of Brothers...so brave, so fragile, so few! We love how Toccoa celebrates their sacrifice every October with this event.

After singing at the hangar dance and the opening ceremonies, we squeezed in a Hughey flight!

Talk about a bad hair day! And we still had the banquet to sing at in an hour!

We were so proud of Phil who hates to fly on an airliner, yet sucked it up and climbed aboard an aircraft on which the only thing between the passenger and the wild blue yonder is a seatbelt!

Aside from the crew, we were the only adults on this particular flight. If they thought we would supply any necessary responsibility, they were sadly mistaken because we were far worse than the kids!

Ever the photographer, I tried to get shots that made me thankful for that seatbelt, as the pilot banked without warning. Glad I had the camera strapped to my wrist!

Yep, it's a real fresh-air flight. Those are my feet. Gotta watch that first step!

Yay! We did it and we loved it. Wrap it and send it! We'll take it! Thanks again, Toccoa, for another wonderful weekend.

  1. Reading anything that catches the excitement and expectation of a moment is always a delight. This is a wonderfully introspective essay. Your descriptive descriptions of both physically and symbolically preparing to take off were Travel sometimes seems to reflect personal development. Sometimes the thrill of a trip is found in the mental place we enter as much as in the destination. You have fairly caught that here.

Your comments reminded me how the excitement of travelling, whether for an adventure or just a getaway, is a special mix of optimism and opportunity. I appreciate you sharing this; next time I'm on the road, I will most surely carry the sensation of "fixin't to fly".
